Interesting facts about the history of the castle and town
1274
In 1274, Bolesław Wstydliwy granted Dębno to comes Świętosław of Gryf coat of arms.
XIII century
The first fortified settlement was established in Dębno in the 13th century on the initiative of the comes Świętosław (Gryf coat of arms). It was a wooden-earth fortress founded on an oval plan, measuring 30 x 60 m, surrounded by a moat and an earthen rampart.
XIV century
In the middle of the 14th century Dębno fell into the hands of the influential Odrowąż family.
1470 – 1480
Between 1470 and 1480, the castellan of Krakow and great chancellor of the Crown, Jakub of Dębno (Odrowąż coat of arms) financed the construction of a new knightly castle in Dębno. That's how a gem of Polish late Gothic architecture was created.
1586
In 1586, the then owner Ferenc Wesselini, secretary to King Stefan Batory, renovated Dębno Castle in the Renaissance style.
XVIII century
Another reconstruction of Dębno Castle took place at the end of the 18th century.
A fragment of the northern wing was added at the time.
1939
The last of the owners of Debno Castle, Stanislaw Jastrzebski, left it in September 1939, and the building was taken over by the German occupation authorities.
1945
After World War II, Debno Castle became the property of the State Treasury. It was used by the Association of Art and Culture Historians, the Association of Art Historians, and for some time also by an agricultural training school and a library.For a short time it even housed a police station.
1970-1978
Between 1970 and 1978 Debno Castle was extensively renovated.
1978
In 1978, a branch of the Tarnów District Museum was located within the walls of Dębno Castle.
30 June 2019
On 30 June 2019 in Dębno the 24th International Tournament of Knights for the Golden Braid of Tarłówna took place.
