The castle in Niepołomice was built in the 14th century on the initiative of Casimir the Great. Situated on the slope of the Vistula river valley, the Gothic fortress consisted of three towers, buildings in the southern and eastern wings and curtain walls arranged around a courtyard.

During the reign of Sigismund I the Old, the castle in Niepołomice was thoroughly rebuilt. The old-fashioned Gothic was replaced with a Renaissance style.The fortress was given the form of a quadrilateral with an inner courtyard, which was decorated with a string of cloisters.

In 1550, during the fire at the Niepołomice Castle, the eastern and northern wings were destroyed.
1551-1568
Zygmunt II August repaired the damage caused by the fire in the Niepołomice castle. The work was carried out under the direction of Tomasz Grzymała and the sculptor Santi Gucci. Staircases and cloisters supported by three pillars were built at that time.By the south wing, Queen Bona's Italian gardens were established.
