Interesting facts about the history of the castle and town
1018
The first mention of Biecz, dating back to 1018 ,appears in the chronicle of Thietmar.
1124
In 1124, Biecz was plundered by the son of Volodymyr of Przemyśl. In retaliation, Bolesław III the Wrymouth invaded the lands around Przemyśl, and then fought a victorious battle at Wilichow with his aggressive neighbour.
23 April 1228
On 23 April 1228, in Biecz, in the presence of envoys of the Order, Konrad Mazowiecki issued a document by virtue of which he granted to the Teutonic Order the Chełmińska Land and the village of Orłowo.
1257
Biecz was granted town rights after 1257, probably during the reign of Leszek II the Black.
XIII century
In the 13th century, the rulers of Lesser Poland erected a brick castle in Biecz with dimensions of 42 x 20 m. The stronghold had one tower with a diameter of 10 m on the north-western side. It was situated on a hill, called Góra Zamkowa (Castle Hill), 334 metres above sea level. Only its foundations have survived to this day. St. Peter's Church was built next to the fortress.
1306-1333
During the reign of Wladyslaw Lokietek (Wladyslaw the Short) the town was granted the right of the sword, allowing local juries to even punish robbers caught on the roads with the death penalty.
XIV wiek
In the second half of the 14th century Biecz was surrounded by city walls.
1303
In 1303 the town of Biecz increased the possessions of Jan Muskata.
1308-1309
In 1308 or 1309, John Muskata gave Biecz to the abbot of Tyniec, who was to guard the castle for an agreed annual fee.
1311
Probably in 1311 Jan Muskata lost the castle in Biecz for his participation in a rebellion of wójt (voyt- village mayor) Albert.
26 December 1362
On the 26th of December 1362 Biecz received a privilege to build a weighhouse, cutting room and salt stalls.
23 February 1363
On 23 February 1363 Biecz was granted Magdeburg town rights by Casimir the Great.
30 January 1376
On 30 January 1376, in Biecz, in order to persuade the nobility to fight against Wladyslaw the White, Louis of Anjou issued a document in which he promised the starost of Radom, Jan of Tarnów, that he would compensate him for any damage the latter might suffer in his fight against the king's enemies in Poland.
1384
In 1384, Jadwiga of Anjou passed through Biecz while on her way to Poland for her coronation.
1395
In 1395 Queen Jadwiga of Anjou gave the royal court in Biecz to the newly established hospital. The building was situated near the Lower Town Gate. She was supported in the foundation by the town councillors and the burgher Mikołaj Cyncerlink.
1399
In 1399 Wladyslaw II Jagiello issued a document in which he obliged townsmen to work on repairing the town walls in Biecz.
4 November 1401
On the 4th of November 1401 at the castle in Biecz Władysław II Jagiełło got engaged to Anna Cylejska.
November 1414
In November 1414 in Biecz, Wladyslaw Jagiello issued powers of attorney for his deputies who were to go to the Council of Constance.
April 1431
At the end of April 1431 in Biecz, Wladyslaw Jagiello met with envoys of Swidrygiello and grand Paul Bellitzer von Russdorff.
22 June 1431
Around 22 June 1431, Wladysław Jagiełło sent Lutek of Brzezie Biecz to Świdrygiełło . The royal brother, after hearing the messenger, let his emotions carry him away and imprisoned the royal envoy.
1439
In 1439 on the castle in Biecz Wladyslaw III met with Albrecht I Habsburg.
1475
In 1475 Kazimierz IV Jagiellończyk decided to pull down the castle located on the castle hill.The starost's seat was moved to a new castle, which was situated outside the town walls, on the eastern side of the town.
XVI century
In the 16th century, Biecz was known throughout Europe for its goldsmithing, woodcarving and painting.For this reason, it was listed among the seventeen most beautiful towns of the Republic of Poland in the famous book the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries Civitates orbis terraum, dedicated to the most beautiful towns of Europe, by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg.
1631
In 1631 Biecz was besieged by a dragoon captain Patrick Gordon. Three-day-long attempts to capture the town fortifications were to no avail.The robber had to give in and look for his prey somewhere else.
1656
In 1656 John II Casimir visited Biecz.
1783
In 1783 the office of theutioner was abolished in Biecz.
